Ospreys and numerous species of birds, animals, reptiles and other creatures are listed as endangered or threatened in Vermont. Companies like Central Vermont Public Service and individuals like Meeri Zetterstrom can play an important role in protecting and restoring these species, but the Nongame and Natural Heritage Program of the Department of Fish and Wildlife plays a vital role.
You can help by volunteering time or ideas to preserve these species, or by making financial contributions to the Nongame and Natural Heritage Program.
Nongame and Natural Heritage Program Mission
The mission of the Nongame and Natural Heritage Program is to inventory, protect, and enhance nongame wildlife, native plants, and significant natural communities in Vermont, and to help people better appreciate these resources. Nongame wildlife includes wild mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, mollusks, crustaceans, insects, and other invertebrates not normally fished, hunted, or trapped.
The easiest way to help protect Vermont's natural heritage is to make a tax-deductible contribution:
By check, payable to the Nongame Wildlife Fund, VT Fish & Wildlife Dept., 103 South Main St., Waterbury, VT 05671-0501
On your Vermont Income Tax Return: Look for the loon silhouette
On Vermont Hunting & Fishing License Applications: Look for the loon silhouette and write in your contribution.
By buying a Vermont Conservation License Plate: Contact the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles at 802-828-2000 or your local District Office for an application ($20 additional per year).
