The primary goal of the Vermont Bald Eagle Restoration Initiative is to establish a self-sustaining breeding population of bald eagles distributed in three regions of Vermont, and the ultimate removal of the species from the Vermont list of endangered and threatened species.
We have developed two specific recovery objectives:
1) Downlist the bald eagle in Vermont from state-endangered to state-threatened status, or
2) Remove the bald eagle from the state's Endangered and Threatened Species List altogether. This state delisting is contingent on federal delisting by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
There are specific technical criteria under development that would be used to determine when downlisting or delisting would occur.
To achieve its objectives, the Vermont
Bald Eagle Restoration Initiative is expected to raise at
least half a dozen eagle chicks for release into the wild
annually between 2004 and 2006. Education, stewardship and
volunteerism will play roles in this effort.
Report bald eagle sitings!
The bald eagles we've released have large metal bands on each
leg. If you see an eagle, let us know. We want to know where
and when you saw the bird, whether it was with other eagles,
and whether there is any white on the head or tail. If you
have a spotting scope and can identify a band number, that
will help us track the released birds' progress and movements.
