Berkshire Cow Power began generating electricity on Nov. 30, 2006. While the Pleasant Valley Farm, which owns Berkshire Cow Power is not in CVPS territory, CVPS has signed a contract to purchase renewable energy credits and associated environmental benefits from approximately 3.5 million kilowatt-hours of generation.
Location: Richford, Vt.
History: The Pleasant Valley Farm, owned by Mark and Amanda St. Pierre, was constructed in 1998. Mark and Amanda were both raised on farms. Mark began farming on his own in 1986, and at one time operated four farms in the Richford area, until he consolidated and built the Pleasant Valley Farm. The St. Pierres have three children who are all active in 4-H.
Cows: 1,500 milking cows
Production: The farm produces over 40 million pounds of milk a year, and is expected to produce 3.5 million KWH (kilowatt-hours) of electricity a year.
