Calculate Your Energy Costs
Keep Track of Your Electric Usage - Appliance Use
The average use of the appliances listed in this chart is based on a typical family
of four. Because your own use may vary depending on lifestyle, time of year and
time of day, your actual total may vary.
Simply go through the list and check what appliances you use in your household.
At the bottom of the list, put in the rate per kilowatt-hour. Take a look at your
total. Then, go back through the list and deselect those items that you think you
can do without and see the energy savings in the new total.

To calculate the monthly operating cost of an appliance, we are multiplying the
rate per kilowatt-hour by the average kilowatt-hours used per month. For a rough
calculation, you can use 13 cents per kilowatt-hour, the approximate year-round
average cost of electricity to our residential users.
* VERY IMPORTANT - you MUST put in the decimal
to calculate cents: .13.
